In 2020, the Derbyshire Chess Association celebrated 75 years since its inauguration. The association is affiliated to the English Chess Federation (ECF). The Association runs the Derby and District Chess League as well as a number of other chess competitions in Derbyshire.

Any Chess Club interested in entering a team in the Derby and District Chess League should make contact through the Officers and Contacts page. All standards of play are catered for.

GILBERTO TEMPLO

Gilberto died on Monday 26th February at the Derby Royal Hospital. His sister Gilda was with him. He was a very popular and enthusiastic member of Rolls-Royce Chess Club and was also active in the English Deaf Chess Association, where he won his section twice at their annual congress, earning a silver trophy nearly as big as himself. He was always cheerful and friendly in spite of his difficulties communicating. He will be much missed. Gilberto's funeral will be at 3pm on 28th March at Markeaton Crematorium in the Round Chapel.

Derbyshire Congress September 23-24 2023

This event, which must rank as one of the most significant in recent Derbyshire chess history, was a great success marked by notable achievements by several local players.

The Open, predictably, was won by GM Mark Hebden who made a clean sweep with 5/5, but John Potter of Belper finished a clear second with a strong 4/5.

The Major was won by Drag Sudar, a Nottingham player with many links to Derbyshire; the Intermediate by Matt Bubis of Belper; the Minor by David Dunne of Nomads, Nottingham; and the Foundation by Jonah Tomsett of West Nottingham, all with scores of 4½/5.

Many thanks to organiser David Woodhouse and Chief Arbiter John Shaw for making this fine occasion happen and run so smoothly.

Full crosstables of all four sections will be posted shortly on the Tournaments 2000/1 - present page, and in due course the scores of all games from the Open section will be made available.

The 2024 event will be held at the same venue on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th November 2024. Entries will open sometime in April 2024.

Derbyshire Chess History

Maurice Hill has kindly supplied some excellent photographs; one of the Bemrose School chess team from 1956, which has been added to the Bemrose School page, and two of an early 1960s simultaneous display by Bob Wade, which has been added to the Rolls-Royce club page of the History Section.

The History section is being expanded with more articles about club histories and items of interest from the long-defunct Derbyshire Chess Magazine and other sources.

Any contributions will be very welcome and should be sent to mickalderson@btinternet.com.
